This summer, Miami’s cultural scene comes alive as Area Stage marks their 35th anniversary. With three and a half decades of captivating performances and unforgettable memories, Area Stage has become a pillar of the arts community in Miami, shaping the landscape of theater in South Florida and beyond.

Area Stage, founded in 1989 by John and Maria Rodaz, has stood as a beacon of artistic innovation and inclusion, offering world-class productions and training programs that have inspired generations of performers. With 35 years in business, Area Stage has been a catapult for award-winning alumni from Golden Globe Award Winner and Primetime Emmy Award Nominee Oscar Issac to Scenic Designer, part of the Tony nominated set design team for Broadway’s Hangmen Frank Oliva.

With a cast of diverse, young talent from all around the country, including Jonathan Chisolm, a nonbinary actor playing the role of Ursula, and Imran Hylton, son of Jamaican immigrants and alumni of New World School of the Arts playing the role of Sebastian, Area Stage exemplifies their commitment to diversity and representation. Area Stage and Loxen are extremely proud to announce that the role of the Little Mermaid will be played by Delaney Benson – daughter of Jodi Benson, original voice of Ariel in Disney’s 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid!

In addition to its award-winning mainstage productions, Area Stage houses a world-class Conservatory, which provides professional training to hundreds of young aspiring artists each year, as well as the Inclusion Theatre Project, a program that offers similar opportunities to participants with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This commitment to diversity and inclusion ensures that everyone in the audience can find roles to identify with, reflecting the rich cultural mosaic of Miami and standing as a staple to the next generation of future artists.

Get ready for a splash with Area Stage, as they dive into an immersive version of Ariel’s story! Moreover, in a unique collaboration, Area Stage is proud to partner with Loxen Productions for this momentous occasion. Loxen Productions, founded in 2019 by Miami native Benjamin León IV, provides artistic opportunities to remarkable talent, both in arts and tech in South Florida. Benjamin León IV, also known as “Benji,” continues to make a notable impact in the South Florida theatre community, supporting the local theatre scene and having achievements such as co-producing the Tony nominated revival of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street starring Josh Groban.
