Blue Whales: Return of the Giants Premieres at the AutoNation® IMAX® 3D Theater at the Museum of Discovery and Science

AutoNation® IMAX® 3D Theater Museum of Discovery and Science 401 SW 2nd St., Fort Lauderdale,, FL, United States
The AutoNation® IMAX® 3D Theater at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) will premiere Blue Whales: Return of the Giants starting on January 26, 2024. The first giant-screen film on the subject, Blue Whales, was produced by Oceanic Films in collaboration with Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Tangled Bank Studios and SK Films and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). MODS is one of only a few Florida theaters with screens large enough to display life-sized blue whales. Blue Whales: Return of the Giants introduces audiences to the endangered species, which is not widely understood despite its status as the largest animal to have ever existed. Through two scientific expeditions, the film shows stunning footage of blue whale feeding habits, long-distance communication and mother-calf relationships. One expedition focuses on the search for a missing blue whale population off the coast of the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean while the other expedition joins marine biologist Diane Gendron, also known as the “Blue Whale Whisperer,” in the Gulf of California to observe whale families. Narrated by award-winning actor Andy Serkis, scored by Academy Award-winner Steven Price, and presented in 3D, Blue Whales will immerse audiences in the ocean alongside the massive blue whales and other species such as dolphins, sperm whales, sea lions and orcas. The documentary also features research from local marine biologist Jeremy Kiszka, professor of biology at Florida International University in Miami, Florida. Dr. Kiszka studies the ecology and behavior of cetaceans (whales and dolphins) in tropical marine ecosystems around the globe, particularly in the Caribbean, along the coasts of Florida and in the Indian Ocean. To view the trailer, please visit BlueWhalesfilm.com. The AutoNation® IMAX® Theater at the Museum of Discovery and Science is located at 401 SW 2nd Street in Fort Lauderdale. Blue Whales: Return of the Giants is included in the MODS Discovery Pass, an all-in-one ticket that includes Museum exhibitions, live science demonstrations and one IMAX documentary film. Survival of the Slowest Exhibit at Museum of Discovery and Science

Museum of Discovery and Science 401 SW 2nd St., Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States
Sometimes being slow, small or weak can have its advantages in Survival of the Slowest, the newest summer traveling exhibit presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, running June 7 through September 5, at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Guests will get an in-depth look at the often-overlooked species that evolved to slow down as part of their survival strategy in a world where large, strong and fast animals are often at the top of the food chain. The exhibit will feature 14 habitats with live animals (17 species) and plants. Guests will get an up-close look at wildlife with daily presentations featuring a sloth, a tarantula, tortoises, a hedgehog, a blue-tongued skink and more* via wildlife educators and MODS’ Life Sciences staff. Meet animals that have survived for millions of years despite being very slow and learn about the puzzling sides of evolution and adaptation. Discover the difference between warm- and cold-blooded species, explore why some animals need less food than others and see the unique ways they hide from predators. This educational exhibit looks at the different survival strategies of various species. How can slow and steady win the race? Does bigger always mean better? What animals benefit from being weak rather than strong? This exhibit looks at the advantages and disadvantages of these different traits. This world class exhibit is produced by Little Ray’s Nature Exhibitions in collaboration with the Canadian Museum of Nature. It is locally sponsored by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Little Ray’s Nature Centres is the largest exotic animal rescue organization in Canada with educational programs reaching more than one million Canadians each year. Most of the animals in this exhibition are rescues. Included with Museum admission. For more information about MODS’ Survival of the Slowest, visit mods.org/exhibit/survivaloftheslowest. A Shonda, A World Premiere Musical

The Foundry 2306 N Dixie Hwy, Wilton Manors, FL, United States
Plays of Wilton (POW!) and Ronnie Larsen Presents will present a world premiere musical “A Shonda” from the creators of hit musicals “Now & Then,” “Come Out, Come Out,” and “One More Yesterday”, at The Foundry from July 10 through August 11, 2024. Two worlds collide in this musical about two men deeply in love in Memphis, Tennessee. A young Orthodox Jewish man and a down home country boy struggle to reconcile their relationship as their communities try to keep them apart by using religion and God as a wedge. This is the first musical ever written to explore these two worlds through the lens of a gay relationship. “A Shonda” stars Jackson Goad, making his POW! debut and Brandon Campbell returning to POW! after his critically acclaimed performance in the sold out run of “The Prisoners”. Costarring are Angie Radosh and Avi Hoffman who’s stars shown bright in POW!’s world premiere musical “One More Yesterday” and Ana Marie Calise making her POW! debut. The production is directed by Ronnie Larsen, founder and artistic director, POW!. Returning to POW! as choreographer is two-time Carbonell nominee, Oren Korenblum. Larsen has been working on the idea of the stage play “A Shonda” becoming a musical for about five years. In February 2024, Larsen and Dennis Manning pulled the musical together based on the original stage play by Wendy Graff. All the songs are original by Dennis Manning, with additional music by noted local composer and pianist Bobby Peaco. “I want to present something I have not seen before. Many gay men struggle with their faith, whatever religion that may be, and being gay and being accepted. And, I believe people will be moved by this journey that they will be a part of with “A Shonda the Musical,” said Larsen. “Also, audiences will find the production very timely given so many events happening in our world today,” Larsen added. “The opening songs gives us the crux of the situation for all of us from the song “Hometown,” and it goes like a merry-go-round. Do you get off or stay on in this hometown,” said Dennis Manning, composer and lyricist. “A Shonda” runs Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m. Tickets are available at www.playsofwilton.com.
