While the beloved Canyon restaurant in Fort Lauderdale has closed its doors, you can still savor its flavors at home. This Prickly Pear Margarita recipe, crafted by former beverage director Natalie Samario, lets you recreate one of the restaurant’s most cherished cocktails right in your own kitchen.

Ingredients

Sour Mix (makes 1 batch):

  • 4 Cups fresh lime juice
  • 1 Cup fresh Orange Juice
  • 8 Cups Water
  • 4 Cups Sugar
  • Bring 4 cups of water to a boil and stir in sugar until dissolved. Cool down and add the remaining 4 cups of boiled water, lime juice and orange juice.

Infused Tequila (makes 1 batch):

  • 6 Prickly Pears, peeled
  • 1 bottle of your favorite reposado tequila
  • Place tequila and Prickly Pears in an airtight container and let sit for 24 hours in a cool, dry place.

For one serving of The Famous Prickly Pear Margarita:

  • 1.5 oz of the infused Tequila
  • 0.5 oz orange liqueur/triple sec
  • 2 oz sour mix
  • Shake well over ice and strain over fresh ice in a glass with a salt rim and garnish with a lime wedge.

How to Make The Famous Prickly Pear Margarita

  • Prep your glasses – If you want to salt the rim of your glass, simply run a lime or orange wedge around the edge and dip the rim in either coarse Kosher salt or sugar. Set the glass aside until ready to use.
  • Combine the ice, prickly pear-infused Reposado tequila, sour mix, and Cointreau, in a cocktail shaker. If you do not have a shaker use a mason jar with a lid – works like a charm!
  • Shake shake shake – give the mixture a good shake to combine flavors.
  • Fill your rimmed glass with ice cubes & use a strainer to pour over the ice.
  • Garnish with a slice of lime and enjoy!
