The North Pole Pajama Party, South Florida’s favorite winter family tradition, returns to MODS on Saturdays, December 9 and 16, from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.!
Comfy patterned pajamas and elf costumes are encouraged for this festive event! Enjoy a holiday science show, test your aim at our tropical “snowball” throwing station, make-and-take your own snow globe and build your own snowman.
Admission includes an invitation to see The Polar Express in the AutoNation® IMAX® Theater. The film will start at 10 a.m.
Activity highlights include penning a letter to Santa, popping bubbles in our bubble zone, viewing a snowy liquid nitrogen show and enjoying marshmallows frozen in liquid nitrogen swimming in hot chocolate! Early Learners (ages 0-6) can hunker down for holiday story time!

Practice your aim with Science Park “snowball” target shooting, and experience a liquid nitrogen show. Young explorers (ages 0-6) will observe how snowstorms can appear in a jar, experience misty bubbles, create snowball paintings and winter magic watercolors. “Black Art, Black Artists Shaping Tomorrow’s History,” a new fine art exhibit, will anchor History Fort Lauderdale’s Black History Month showcase. An annual homage, this new installment will feature works for show and sale from Dillard Center for the Arts’ Advanced Placement (AP) students and instructors, from February 4 – 29. Curated by Dillard instructor Celestin Joseph, the exhibit of photography and studio art features creative re-imaginings and reflections of historical Black leaders, community icons, and hometown heroes. A meet and greet with the artists will take place on Sunday, February 4, at 1 p.m., at the New River Inn Museum of History building on History Fort Lauderdale’s campus.
“Black Art, Black Artists Shaping Tomorrow’s History,” will highlight a variety of styles and mediums reflecting African American culture, history and the arts as viewed through the lens of 12 youth. Featured pieces in the exhibition include works by AP students Selene Michel and Timothy Graham.
Joseph received his master’s in fine arts in painting from the University of Pennsylvania. He received a bachelor’s in fine arts, cum laude, from the University of Hartford as a painting major, with an art history minor, and concentrations in printmaking and graphic design studies. Joseph also received a prestigious Yale/Norfolk Art and Music Scholarship to further his studies. Currently, he is teaching Advanced Placement studio art classes at his alma mater Dillard Center for the Arts where he has been strengthening the visual arts program since 1999.
History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, hosts a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. It seeks to bring awareness to the community through both traveling exhibits and multiple permanent exhibits including “Women Trailblazers,” “Fort Lauderdale – the Early Years,” “The African American Experience,” “Fashion & Musical Theatre,” “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts: the story of boatbuilding along the New River,” Seminole Arts & Culture,” “New River Archaeology,” “Viva Fort Lauderdale: Celebrating Hispanic Art & Culture,” and, most recently, “Take PRIDE, a retrospective on LGBTQ life in South Florida.” The nonprofit museum also hosts an artists’ collective collaborative space.
“Black Art, Black Artists Shaping Tomorrow’s History” is sponsored by the following funds at the Community Foundation of Broward: Jan and Ed Crocker Unrestricted Fund, Leo M. and Alice J. Rutten Fund and The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation Broward Community Fund. History Fort Lauderdale is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. with docent guided tours, daily, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Group walking tours are available upon special request. Admission is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is free for members, military and children ages six and under. History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present a free Family Fun Day, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, February 24. The day will feature kid-friendly activities presented in conjunction with museum partners Flamingo Gardens and NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and will include a book signing and meet & greet with George LeMieux and Laura Mize, authors of Florida Heritage Kids. Their appearances are part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author monthly series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed.
Florida Heritage Kids is an insightful novel that takes readers on historical journeys from a Spanish settlement to the modern era, through the eyes of five young people - Alonso, Holata, Thomas, Madeleine, and Ruby. Their stories tell of soldiers storming an enemy fort during a chaotic hurricane, the tale of a young Indian warrior helping rescue the Tribe, fleeing from a cloud of mosquitoes so big it blocks out the sun and the learning experience of moving to a new tropical paradise. Florida Heritage Kids highlights culture, heritage, and the natural resources found in Florida, which gives readers a better understanding of the Sunshine State’s fundamentals. The book is available in History Fort Lauderdale’s Museum Shop, on Amazon.com, and at FloridaHeritageKids.com.
Florida native George S. LeMieux has enjoyed a long career in both the private and public sectors. He served as Florida’s 34th United States senator in the 111th Congress. He also served as Florida’s deputy attorney general and as former Governor Charlie Crist’s chief of staff. LeMieux is a practicing attorney and is a chairman on the board of Gunster. He founded the LeMieux Center for Public Policy at Palm Beach Atlantic University.
Laura E. Mize is an award-winning book author, an independent journalist, and a former reporter for The Palm Beach Post. Her work has been picked up by the Associated Press, published in newspapers across the country, and aired on National Public Radio. Her first book, Florida Made: The 25 Most Important Figures Who Shaped The State (written with George S. LeMieux), won the 2019 National Indie Excellence Award in the history genre. Mize has written extensively on Florida business, history, food, dining, and agriculture. Some of that work has appeared in The Local Palate, the premier magazine on Southern culinary culture. In addition, she has an extensive portfolio of health sciences writing for institutions such as Mayo Clinic and the University of Florida, and for the award-winning, internationally syndicated radio show Health in a Heartbeat.

History Fort Lauderdale and Galleria Fort Lauderdale will celebrate the impactful women of today who lead our community alongside their groundbreaking historical female predecessors who helped to pave the way to success in its “Women Trailblazers: Champions of Change - Broward County” 2024 presented by UKG free photography exhibition. The exhibit runs through March 31 at Galleria Fort Lauderdale (2414 E. Sunrise Boulevard) during Women’s History Month.
This year’s celebrated women of today are Arlene Pecora, president and CEO of Signature Grand, Jenni Morejon, president and CEO of the Fort Lauderdale Downtown Development Authority, Laurie Sallarulo, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of South Florida, Sigrid McCawley, managing partner of Boies Schiller Flexner, and Jasmin Shirley, program director, CIED,HICP, of Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc.
Past pioneering women counterparts to be highlighted in the photo exhibit include Jeanne Goon Moy (1913-2006), owner and operator of Moy Chinese Restaurant in Hollywood, Florence Hardy (1897-1975), the City of Fort Lauderdale’s first female city clerk and sometime acting city manager who collaborated with the Chamber of Commerce to build Las Olas canals, bridges, and isles, Blanche Forman (1886-1959), who established Hamilton and Blanche Forman Foundation to support education and donated land for the now esteemed Nova Southeastern University, Barbara Bridge (1929-2016), the first female county court judge and second female circuit court judge, and Betty Mae Tiger Jumper (1923-2011), the first Seminole to graduate high school and earn a higher education nursing degree. Tiger Jumper spent most of her adult life advocating for the Seminole community and improving healthcare services.

The Art of Hip Hop

In celebration of Women's History Month, the Art of Hip Hop will honor Lucy Lopez (formerly of Power 96), Supa Cindy (99 Jamz), and Stichiz (103.5 The Beat) for their impact on Miami’s music and Hip Hop culture with a special open-to-the-public panel discussion on March 15th at 6:30 PM. The discussion will celebrate their rise in a male-dominated industry, highlighting Lucy Lopez's 15+ years as the Voice of Miami, Stichiz's dynamic multilingual Hip Hop artistry and community leadership, and Supa Cindy's influential role at 99 Jamz and her collaborative projects, like an all-female album with Trina among others. Each has uniquely contributed to the landscape of Miami's Hip Hop scene through their careers in media and music. The Art of Hip Hop will also be presenting awards to these women for their achievements.
