In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present the return of “Viva Fort Lauderdale: Celebrating Hispanic Art & Culture” from Friday, September 15 through Sunday, October 15. This fine art and sculpture exhibit celebrating the contributions of our multicultural Latin community will feature work from local artists including Leonardo Montoya (Colombia), Lifrancis Rojas (Venezuela), Isabel Perez Salazar (Venezuela) and Florencia Clement de Grandprey (Spain). History Fort Lauderdale is proud to host a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. It seeks to bring awareness to the community through both traveling exhibits and multiple permanent exhibits including “Women Trailblazers,” “Fort Lauderdale – the Early Years,” “The African American Experience,” “Fashion & Musical Theatre,” “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts: the story of boatbuilding along the New River,” Seminole Arts & Culture,” “New River Archaeology,” and, most recently, “Take PRIDE, a retrospective on LGBTQ life in South Florida.” The nonprofit museum also hosts an artists’ collective collaborative space. History Fort Lauderdale is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. with docent guided tours, daily, at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Group walking tours are available upon special request. History Fort Lauderdale is proud to present “Visions of Women,” its first ever fine art exhibition from the National League of American Pen Women Fort Lauderdale Branch (NLAPW). This new exhibition will feature art from NLAPW award-winning artists/members Claudia Hafner, Judy Nunno, Phoenix, Donna Sallee, and Tammy Seymour, from April 4 – 30. A free meet and greet with the artists will take place on opening day, Thursday, April 4, from 6 – 8 p.m. at the New River Inn Museum of History building on History Fort Lauderdale’s campus. "Visions of Women" is a profound exploration of art that illuminates the human experience, fires the imagination, and nurtures the soul. This exhibition is not only a celebration of artistic talent but also a tribute to the strength and creativity of accomplished women artists in our community. During this special event, guests will have the opportunity to meet the artists in person, engage in insightful conversations about their works, and discover the stories behind each masterpiece. From powerful portraits to captivating landscapes, each artwork tells a unique story that resonates with the theme of empowering women and inspiring others. “Visions of Women” Fine Art Exhibit by NLAPW Fort Lauderdale Branch at History Fort Lauderdale

History Fort Lauderdale presents “Visions of Women,” its first ever fine art exhibition from the National League of American Pen Women Fort Lauderdale Branch (NLAPW). This new exhibition will feature art from NLAPW award-winning artists/members Claudia Hafner, Judy Nunno, Phoenix, Donna Sallee, and Tammy Seymour from April 4 – 30. “Visions of Women” will feature a collection of artworks joined by the theme of “empowering women” and the subjects and causes that inspire them to motivate others. According to Phoenix, president of NLAPW, the conceptual basis for this exhibition was the 100th anniversary of the formal adoption of the 19th Amendment into the U.S. Constitution. This landmark victory granted women the constitutional right to vote. For Pen Women this has extra significance. Its organization was founded in 1897 by Marian Longfellow Donoghue (niece of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) to empower professional women journalists who were discriminated against and excluded by major publications. The original intent of Pen Women founders to find “mutual aid, advice, future development” for professional women artists still resonates. Meet Author John Bailey at History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories”

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present a free book signing and meet & greet with John Bailey, author of “A New River Runs Through It,” on Saturday, March 23, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. His appearance is part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author monthly series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed. “A New River Runs Through It” is an exciting, comprehensive story of a river and the city that grew up along its banks. Beginning with the legend of how the river acquired its name, this narrative brings to life the story of the rugged men and women who settled along it and built the city of Fort Lauderdale into a world class international business and financial center. It ends with the latest events: the recent expansion of rail commuter service, the city’s management of the Covid-19 pandemic, and a look forward to our future. He attended several of the area’s different schools - West Side, Davie, Naval Air, Central, and Fort Lauderdale High School. Many of his personal experiences of growing-up and living along the River are sprinkled throughout this book. The day will feature kid-friendly activities presented in conjunction with museum partners Flamingo Gardens and NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and will include a book signing and meet & greet with George LeMieux and Laura Mize, authors of Florida Heritage Kids. Their appearances are part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author monthly series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed. Florida Heritage Kids is an insightful novel that takes readers on historical journeys from a Spanish settlement to the modern era, through the eyes of five young people - Alonso, Holata, Thomas, Madeleine, and Ruby. Their stories tell of soldiers storming an enemy fort during a chaotic hurricane, the tale of a young Indian warrior helping rescue the Tribe, fleeing from a cloud of mosquitoes so big it blocks out the sun and the learning experience of moving to a new tropical paradise. Florida Heritage Kids highlights culture, heritage, and the natural resources found in Florida, which gives readers a better understanding of the Sunshine State’s fundamentals. LeMieux has enjoyed a long career in both the private and public sectors. He served as Florida’s 34th United States senator in the 111th Congress. He also served as Florida’s deputy attorney general and as former Governor Charlie Crist’s chief of staff. LeMieux is a practicing attorney and is a chairman on the board of Gunster. He founded the LeMieux Center for Public Policy at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Laura E. Mize is an award-winning book author, an independent journalist, and a former reporter for The Palm Beach Post. Her work has been picked up by the Associated Press, published in newspapers across the country, and aired on National Public Radio. Her first book, Florida Made: The 25 Most Important Figures Who Shaped The State (written with George S. LeMieux), won the 2019 National Indie Excellence Award in the history genre. Mize has written extensively on Florida business, history, food, dining, and agriculture. Some of that work has appeared in The Local Palate, the premier magazine on Southern culinary culture. In addition, she has an extensive portfolio of health sciences writing for institutions such as Mayo Clinic and the University of Florida, and for the award-winning, internationally syndicated radio show Health in a Heartbeat. “Chehantamo: How Are You?,” a new Seminole fine art exhibit will debut at History Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, October 22, prior to the start of Native American History Month (November). This collaboration with the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum will feature the perspective of contemporary Seminole artists through large scale digital works juxtaposed with historic artistic context. Multidisciplinary photography, textiles, and more will provide a link to our shared future while acknowledging our shared past. The exhibit opens with a meet and greet at 2 p.m. on October 22 at the New River Inn History Museum and runs through January 6. Curated by Tara Chadwick, “Chehantamo: How Are You?” will showcase mixed media, textiles, and digital art from multigenerational Seminole artists Nicholas DiCarlo, Danielle Nelson, Victoria Osceola, Samuel Tommie, Corinne Zepeda, and the late Elizabeth Buster. History Fort Lauderdale presents “Florida Everglades: River of Grass Reflections”

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “Florida Everglades: River of Grass Reflections” from Sunday, July 2, through Sunday, September 10. The summer exhibit will include colorful impressionist fine art works by Tim Forman together with environmental photographs from History Fort Lauderdale’s archived collection. The exhibition can be viewed in the art space on the first level of the New River Inn (231 Southwest Second Avenue). Tim Forman is the third generation of Formans to have been born and reared in South Florida. He first picked up the brush at nine years old under the instruction of Peter Olsen. By 17, Forman was receiving commissions. Primarily a self-taught artist, Forman’s work is the result of dedicated practice. He uses field sketches, plein air paintings, and photographs to compose his pieces that are painted in layers with both knife and brush. He creates his landscapes to portray the splendor and simplicity of the natural world around us. Through his work, Tim seeks to lift the spirits and inspire awe above our day-to-day lives. Permanent exhibits include “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts,” a visual narrative weaving the story of the ever-changing use of Fort Lauderdale’s waterways by following the strokes of the first people to today’s sightseers, “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows visitors to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of stories and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale. Zeger, author of “The Help of Angels,” on Monday, April 17, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. His appearance is part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet-the-author monthly series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed. The Help of Angels invites readers to view life in Europe before and during the Holocaust from a personal and highly unique perspective. The Help of Angels is a moving historical novel that takes readers on a journey through the time period of 1933 to 1945, showcasing the experiences of Benjamin Weiss, a young man who witnesses the atrocities of the Holocaust firsthand. The novel follows Ben’s life in a small Hungarian town, his family’s survival and loss during the Second World War, and his imprisonment in the Mauthausen concentration camp. The novel tells the fate of one family while highlighting the experience of millions who suffered at the hands of Hungarian and Nazi war criminals. The book is available on Amazon.com and at History Fort Lauderdale’s Museum Shop. H.J. Zeger is a self-taught writer who established his independent publishing company, Sunbridge Books. He grew up in Newburgh, New York, and attended the Culinary Institute of America before pursuing a career in the catering, restaurant, and hotel business. The author's first book, If Frogs Could Fly, is a satirical tale about a search for a lost tribe of Israel in the Amazon Jungle of Peru. Meet Authors Mike McGinness and Jeff Davies at History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories”

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present a free book signing and meet & greet with Mike McGinness and Jeff Davies, authors of “Florida: A History in Pictures” (MacIntyre Purcell Publishing Inc.), on Saturday, February 11, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Their appearance is part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author monthly series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed. Mike McGinness and Jeff Davies have put together the definitive photographic account of the Sunshine State. With more than 130 photographs ― many of them seen for the first time ― “Florida: A History in Pictures” offers a stunning portrait of this one-of-a-kind state. From the stone forts at St. Augustine, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States, to the Everglades (or “The Big Swamp” as it was called at the beginning of the 20th century) to Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, the Fort Myers Beach arches and Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, it is all here. Mike McGinness is a native of Florida, born in Orlando and raised in Altamonte Springs and Tampa. He has lived in Florida for more than 50 years. He has a passion for studying history, the great outdoors, bass fishing, music, and rooting for his favorite sports teams. He works in Data Center Operations for AdventHealth in Altamonte Springs and has been with the same company for 38 years. Boca Raton resident Jeff Davies’ passion for history has spanned many decades. His family relocated to North Bay Village from Brooklyn when Jeff was just five years old. Davies was always interested in the history behind old pictures and became known as the family historian. Meet Author Donn R. Colee, Jr. at History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories”

History Fort Lauderdale, celebrating 60 years of stewardship of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present a free book signing and meet & greet with Donn R. Colee, Jr., author of “Legends & Lore of Fort Lauderdale’s New River” (Arcadia Publishing/The History Press), on Tuesday, January 17, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Colee’s appearance is part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author monthly series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed. Colee Jr. is a seventh-generation Floridian and a direct descendent of George Colee, who immigrated to the St. Augustine area from England in 1821. Donn grew up in Orlando but frequently visited relatives in the ancient city, where his curiosity was piqued by stories about a massacre of long-ago family members at Fort Lauderdale’s New River. While the “Colee Massacre” story was later debunked, it refused to die. His “Legends & Lore of Fort Lauderdale’s New River” began as an attempt to finally resolve the last vestiges of that myth, but the power of New River quickly propelled the book to become a history of the river, its fascinating people, and the transformation of its wilderness into a metropolis. This is his second book. His first, “Towers in the Sand,” is the history of radio and television stations in Florida and the people who brought them to life. His family has been engaged in Florida broadcasting for three generations. Colee is a member of the Florida Historical Society, History Fort Lauderdale, St. Augustine Historical Society, and the Historical Society of Palm Beach County. He is a former commissioner of the Florida Inland Navigation District, the state agency responsible for maintenance and improvements of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway from Fernandina Beach to Key Biscayne. It was built by a company that was cofounded in 1881 by his great-great-great-grandfather, who became its civil engineer. Donn and his wife, Martha, reside in Palm Beach Gardens.
