Q&A WITH SARAH ZOHAR
BACKGROUND & BEGINNINGS
Where are you from?
I grew up in New York and moved to Florida about 21 years ago — I’m dating myself a little!
Tell us about your cultural background.
I’m Middle Eastern — born in Israel and moved to New York when I was four. My late mom was from Egypt and my dad is from Syria, so my family has deep roots in Middle Eastern culture.
Does your culture influence your design work?
It definitely does. Being Jewish and practicing the same way of life, I often design kosher homes and kitchens for modern Orthodox families. It’s an important part of my clients’ lifestyles, and I love that I can bring that understanding and attention to detail into my work.
THE PATH TO DESIGN
How did you get started in design?
I grew up around construction — my dad was a builder in New York for over 60 years. When I moved to Florida, the transition from New York was tough. I was trying to find my place again, and my husband encouraged me to take some classes, maybe photography or something creative.
Then I saw interior design courses at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. I transferred my college credits from Brooklyn, took the design courses, and it came so naturally because I already knew construction. At first, it was just something to do while my kids were in school — but it quickly snowballed into a career.
PASSION & PERSPECTIVE
If you weren’t an interior designer, what would you be doing instead?
I think I’d be an art curator or own an art gallery. I love art, and I’m passionate about how it transforms spaces. Or if I could, I’d be a world traveler — I love exploring new cultures and places!
What’s your favorite place you’ve traveled?
Morocco is one of my favorites — it’s so rich in color, texture, and craftsmanship. I also love Portugal and Italy — they’re filled with beauty and inspiration everywhere you look.
DESIGN EXCELLENCE
What’s one project or accomplishment you’re especially proud of?
We recently won an international design award for a project in Bal Harbour. It involved combining two condo units into one and designing a 700-pound chandelier for the dining room. We had to engineer a reinforced metal ceiling to support it, and I designed the chandelier myself — six feet long, made of thick-cut glass with angled edges that reflected the fractal design of the wall behind it. When it was completed, it was breathtaking.

SIGNATURE STYLE & PHILOSOPHY
How would you describe your signature style in three words?
Timeless, biophilic, and passion.
For anyone who may not know, can you explain what biophilic means?
Biophilic design is about designing within nature — incorporating the natural environment from the exterior into the interior of a project. It’s about creating harmony between people and the spaces they live in.
What’s one design rule you always follow?
Integrity.
And what’s one design “rule” you love to break?
Trends. I don’t follow them; I prefer creating timeless, meaningful spaces that last.
How do you make a home feel both beautiful and livable?
You have to listen. You need to understand how your clients live — their habits, needs, likes, dislikes, even their secrets sometimes. That’s how you curate and create a space that fits them. It’s not about you; it’s about them. We pride ourselves on incorporating the clients wants and needs through biophilic design, incorporating natural elements with soothing color schemes that play on our natural surrounding habitat as well as different fractal patterns that have been designed by nature for the past millions of years.
HOMEOWNER TIPS
How can homeowners refresh their home without a full renovation? A new paint color and some fresh pillows and accessories
What’s one thing worth splurging on? Good appliances
What’s one timeless element that elevates a space? Architectural elements
What’s the most common design mistake homeowners make? The biggest mistake is to piece mail a design without an overall design concept, as well as making sure to hire licensed and insured general contractors because codes and regulations are in place to protect the homeowners and ensue that work is being done according to codes.
