“The Mattachine Family” (USA, 2023) will open this year’s OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fort Lauderdale, internationally acclaimed as one of the largest LGBTQ+ cultural festivals in the world, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 19, at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale (1 E Las Olas Blvd). Directed by Andy Vallentine, this heartwarming comedy drama follows Thomas and Oscar, who, after their first foster child returns to his birth mother, grapple with different ideas about what making a family actually means. Tender and funny, “The Mattachine Family” reflects on “chosen” families, the bonds we form with friends, lovers, and children, and how those define us, elude us, and perplex us. The film stars Nico Tortorella (Younger; Walking Dead: World Beyond), Juan Pablo Di Pace (Fuller House, Mamma Mia!), and Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek). An afterparty will take place at 10 p.m. at Rooftop @1WLO (1 W Las Olas Blvd #700). OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fort Lauderdale’s 15th anniversary edition, internationally acclaimed as one of the largest LGBTQ+ cultural festivals in the world, presents “Marinette” (France, 2023), a biographical story of Marinette Pichon, the pioneer of French women's football who possessed an uncompromising ode to freedom, as its Ladies Spotlight Film. Based on the biography “Ne jamais rien lâcher,” the “Marinette” traces the career of Marinette Pichon over three decades. The film follows her fight to spread awareness of women’s rights in sports. Born in 1975, she was the pioneer of French women's football and one of the greatest stars of that sport in the world. A prodigy discovered at the age of five, she went on to become the first French player to make a career in the United States (men/women combined) and the record holder for the number of goals and selections for the French team (men/women combined). From her childhood, ravaged by an alcoholic and violent father, to the American dream (she was crowned best player and best scorer in the prestigious US league in 2002 and 2003 and "Most Valuable Player" in 2003), via her career with the French team, “Marinette” paints the portrait of a kid from a working-class background who was not destined for such an extraordinary career path. Directed by David Lambert, this relationship comedy-drama follows the ups and downs of married couple Thom and Henri, together for 35 years, now facing retired life and what happens when a love turns sour. Since Thom and Henri met 35 years ago, their love for each other has never faltered. The seemingly perfect life they had built in Brussels started to go awry when Henri retired from being a police officer. Now, Henri’s days seem to stretch endlessly, each one as bland as the next while his feelings for Thom are fading fast. They drift away from each other a little more each day, to the point that their house has become a battleground. Thom’s love for Henri remains strong though and he is not ready to give up. He will do anything to save his relationship and rekindle their love, even if that means asking Henri for a divorce. At 8 p.m. is the North American premiere of “Blue Lights (Luces Azules)” (Argentina, 2023). Directed by Lucas Santa Ana, “Blue Lights” is a vibrant, engaging and sophisticated dramedy that plays out during a 70th birthday celebration. Friends and family gather, tensions soars and secrets are revealed leaving each guest to explore their idea of friends, lovers and self. The film explores the intricacies of love, loss, friendship and the evolving dynamics of gay and lesbian relationships in a changing world.
