Q&A with Kenneth Crawford II

GETTING STARTED IN DESIGN

What sparked your first love of design?
It started with my Lincoln Log set. Then came Legos, and eventually, I started designing my sisters’ dollhouses—until they threw one at me because I kept changing things! laughs

How did you get started in design?
The funny thing is, when I worked my way through school, I was a bartender at a local restaurant. One day a design firm came in because their designer was leaving. The waiter mentioned that I had just graduated from UofL in interior design. The owner walked over, handed me his card, and said, “Come by tomorrow and show me what you’ve got.” I did — and they hired me on the spot

DEFINING MOMENTS

What’s one project or accomplishment that you’re especially proud of?
My Gramercy Park project in New York City. It was for a returning client—I’d already done his Hamptons compound and Fort Lauderdale home—and he asked me to take on his New York place. It was a pre-war tri-level apartment. When it was finished, I literally walked in with tears in my eyes. It was my best work at that point.

SIGNATURE STYLE & PHILOSOPHY

What’s one design rule you always follow?
Be honest with your clients.

One rule I would love to break:
Getting clients out of their comfort zone. (Even just a little)

What’s your favorite room to transform?
The powder bathroom — because everyone uses it! I tell my clients, make it sexy, make it fun. It’s the one space where you can surprise people.

Under your “If budget weren’t a factor, what would you splurge on?
Original Art or Antiques (Whether Mid-Century, Art Deco or even Edwardian)

ADVICE FOR HOMEOWNERS

What’s one small change that can make a big impact in a home?
Change your pillows — quarterly or seasonally. It’s a simple, low-cost refresh that makes a big difference.

What’s one timeless element you always recommend?
Never chase trends. Design should be timeless for the client.

What’s your go-to trick for making a small room feel larger?
Paint. I love Benjamin Moore. You can use color strategically — on ceilings or accent walls — to visually balance the room.
