May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! Dive into the diverse arts specific to Asian-Pacific American cultures at our special event, including the Butterfly Release, presented by Truly Nolen Pest Control. Be dazzled by captivating performances by Kehlani from Polynesian Proud Productions, exhilarating drumming with Ronin Taiko, and demonstrations by Joe Keit Martial Arts and others. Exhibits, Shows and Demos: Explore a variety of art forms that represent the vibrant cultures across Asia and the Pacific Islands, such as crafting your very own butterfly through origami! Then, flutter over to MODS’ Food Forest for the enchanting Butterfly Release to celebrate the beauty of these creatures and the Asian-Pacific traditions that honor them. Animal Encounters: Meet our resident animals and learn about their origins in the Pacific. Watch an IMAX on the GIANT Screen: Extend your experience with a showing of the film Pandas. Career Connections: Meet our community partners to learn about their organizations and their roles in educating the community about Asian-Pacific cultures. Just for early learners (ages 0-6): Engage your little ones in celebrating Asian-Pacific American Heritage with activities tailored for them, including dancing, movement and storytime. Create a Damaru and a Tibetan Flag to commemorate these rich cultures! Experience South Florida’s award-winning attraction featuring 150,000 square feet of dynamic science exhibits, an outdoor science park, a live animal collection, a rotating schedule of science shows, learning labs, café, store and a grand atrium featuring the Great Gravity Clock, a 52-foot-tall kinetic energy sculpture; the largest clock in Florida. The showpiece of the museum since 1993, this unique timepiece is one of only three in the world. Asian-Pacific American Celebration activities are included with Museum admission. Flutter over to the Museum of Discovery and Science’s Food Forest for a Butterfly Release, presented by Truly Nolen Pest Control, during our Asian-Pacific American Heritage Celebration! Immerse yourself in the magic of nature while exploring the vital role these delicate pollinators play in our ecosystems and cultural heritage. From their humble beginnings as caterpillars to their breathtaking transformation into vibrant butterflies, learn about each step of their fascinating life cycle. Celebrate the beauty of these creatures and the Asian-Pacific traditions that honor them. Then, watch in awe as they take their first flight into the Florida sky—a true spectacle of nature’s design. It’s love at first flight, and an experience you won’t want to miss. Children can also visit and investigate ocean marvels in MODS’ latest traveling exhibit, Voyage to the Deep – Underwater Adventures. “Seas” the day and embark on the legendary Nautilus submarine with Captain Nemo for an interactive journey of underwater exploration! The exhibition was created and developed by the Australian National Maritime Museum, an Australian Government entity. Flying Fish manages the exhibit tour. It is locally sponsored by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Tesla: Start your day in the Design District with some speed at Tesla, demo-driving their latest models. Breitling: The just-renovated, luxury watch showroom is debuting their full-service bar in time for dads to enjoy while trying on their timeless timepieces. Join MODS for a morning filled with wonder, education, and the joy of connecting with nature's slowest yet most intriguing inhabitants as you take part in our Slow Down with Sloths: VIP Breakfast & Meet-and-Greet on July 27, from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. This event gives guests exclusive early-morning access to the Museum and includes a meet-and-greet with JJ, the two-toed sloth, Museum admission, breakfast, an IMAX® documentary film and insight into the vital importance of rainforest conservation. Delve into the secrets of sloth behaviors (yes, they’re the slowest animals on Earth!) Learn about their unique adaptations and discover why preserving their rainforest habitats is crucial for survival. It's a chance to deepen your appreciation for these gentle creatures. Our Life Sciences team will be on hand to answer all your questions and share insights into the crucial importance of rainforest conservation. Capture the moment with a perfect sloth selfie to commemorate this unforgettable encounter! (NOTE: The sloth will be held exclusively by the Life Sciences staff.)
