Liaigre, the French Maison known for its rigorously restrained palette and rarefied interiors, has quietly launched a new collaboration at its Miami showroom with a partner that might surprise some: Ateliers Courbet, the art-world favorite known for spotlighting makers at the intersection of design and craft. The collaboration introduces the work of South African ceramicist Katherine Glenday, whose delicate, hand-thrown vessels now punctuate the space with soft color and texture—disrupting (in the most elegant way) the house’s signature minimalism. The idea was sparked by Melanie Courbet, founder of Ateliers Courbet, whose curatorial vision has long focused on the work of artisans steeped in centuries-old methods. What’s intriguing here is the restraint: this is not a flashy installation, but rather a slow, intentional layering of artistry into a space that’s already quietly iconic. It opens up questions about what luxury looks like now—and how materials and process are becoming just as important as silhouette or scale. We invite you to experience this dialogue between Liaigre’s timeless design and Atelier Courbet’s celebration of artisanal mastery, with an exhibition featuring Katherine Glenday’s work on display at Liaigre Miami through May 2025.

Follow Little Foot and her protective herd in Elephants: Giants of the Desert, a larger-than-life 3D documentary film about a rare group of elephants in the Namib Desert, now playing at the AutoNation® IMAX® Theater at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Created by the filmmakers of popular giant screen titles Sea Lions: Life by A Whisker and Serengeti: Journey to the Heart of Africa, Elephants: Giants of the Desert brings the inspiring story of a resilient elephant family surviving against the odds in one of the harshest environments on Earth - Africa’s Namib Desert - to the giant screen for the very first time. Filmed on location in the Namib, one of the oldest and largest deserts, the film provides unprecedented access to one of only two populations of desert elephants in the world, totaling close to 150 individuals compared to a historic population of 2,500-3,500 in the 18th century. Despite having significant needs for water, these elephants have somehow learned to thrive in this land of extremes. With a slow reproduction cycle of 3+ years and a high mortality rate due partly to the desert conditions, every calf becomes more than precious, and the desert elephants themselves seem to know it well, too. The film’s story is driven by Little Foot, a newborn calf, as she survives her perilous and most vulnerable first year despite the odds, helped by a fierce extended family of elephants. Audiences will follow Little Foot on an epic and at times whimsical journey, getting up close and personal with the largest land mammals on the planet as they care for the smallest member of the herd. Together the matriarchal herd of aunts and sisters will brave the desert’s elements and use some elephant superpowers, from finding underground aquifers to foreseeing sandstorms. Through the eyes of these elephants, audiences will also see the hidden side of an otherworldly and formidable landscape, where a cast of iconic animals including giraffes, monkeys and lions form a unique canvas of life. To capture the adventures of Little Foot on screen, the filmmaking crew including Paul Phelan, Tamatea Kohu and Cam Batten lived another kind of adventure behind the camera, lugging intricate production gear into the remote desert, and battling the elements despite being out of their natural habitat. Earning the trust of the elephants, especially around their little one, took patience and respect, for which the filmmakers were rewarded with a close look into the lives of these enigmatic yet endangered creatures. History Fort Lauderdale, in celebration of National Historic Preservation Month, will present “Lauderdale Living: The Architecture of Possibilities” from Thursday, May 1 – Sunday, June 29. The exhibition will showcase rarely seen historical photographs from the museum’s collection alongside contemporary works by artists Christina Lihan and Abby Laughlin. A free public opening reception with the artists will take place on Thursday, May 1, from 6 – 8 p.m., at the New River Inn Museum of History building on History Fort Lauderdale’s campus (231 Southwest Second Avenue). Florida-based artist Christina Lihan transforms delicate paper into intricate sculptural landscapes, hand-cutting, folding, scoring and carving architectural forms that play with light and shadow. With a background in architecture from the University of Virginia and Columbia University, her work reflects a deep understanding of composition, technique, and design. Her meditative, labor-intensive process creates immersive environments that evoke a sense of place, often raising subtle questions of environmental justice. Her pieces have been exhibited internationally, from Shanghai to Tel Aviv, and she was recently commissioned to create eight large-scale sculptures for a new hotel in central London. Fort Lauderdale artist and activist Abby Laughlin documents the beauty and history of mid-century modern architecture through photography and curated exhibitions. A former real estate professional with expertise in adaptive rehab, she brings a passionate, hands-on perspective to the importance of historic properties in shaping community identity. Laughlin serves on the boards of the Fort Lauderdale History Center and Docomomo US Florida, and is currently developing three major projects, including a fine arts book and a photography exhibit on mid-century landmarks. Her work captures both the nostalgia and urgency of preserving South Florida’s architectural heritage. The Stonewall Uprising: The Start of a Movement Exhibit

In June 1969, riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village are generally cited as the starting point of the LGBTQIA+ rights movement, but the facts are considerably more nuanced and even disputed. Then referred to as the Gay and Lesbian Rights Movement, the LGBTQIA+ rights movement had been steadily, if slowly, growing during the 1960s. Arguably, the first widely noted times gay bar patrons fought back against police harassment took place in California years before the Stonewall riots. Media coverage immediately after the Stonewall uprising was minimal. Yet within a year, the first gay pride marches had taken place and gay activist organizations had sprung up. The era of LGBTQIA+ liberation was about to dawn. This exhibition looks at the who, what, and where of those June nights in an attempt to understand why the Stonewall Riots became the catalytic movement in the effort to secure equal rights for LGBTQIA+ Americans. A salacious love triangle, secrets and intrigue haunt the modern American tragedy The Dying Gaul by Craig Lucas making its South Florida premiere at Island City Stage on May 22. The show runs through June 15. In The Dying Gaul, a grieving screenwriter compromises his ideals to make a small fortune that enables him to climb from invisible poverty into the rarefied seductions and surreal beauty of the Hollywood Hills. Hailed in 1998 as the best American play by The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, The Dying Gaul premiered off-Broadway at New York City’s Vineyard Theatre to rave reviews. Craig Lucas later adapted the play into a 2005 film (starring Peter Sarsgaard, Campbell Scott and Patricia Clarkson) marking his directorial debut. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize and the National Board of Review awarded the film Special Recognition for Excellence in filmmaking. The personal and professional life of acclaimed playwright, screenwriter and film director Craig Lucas is as engrossing as his plays. Abandoned as a child when he was eight months old and adopted by a conservative Pennsylvania couple, he repressed both his Jewish identity and sexual preference for years. It was only till he embraced his identity as a gay Jewish man that he was able to develop as an artist and as a person. A 1973 graduate of Boston University, earning a bachelor’s degree in creative writing and theater, his mentor Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, Anne Sexton, urged him to move to New York City to become a playwright. In 1979, his life-changing professional break took place when he collaborated with theater and film director Norman René. The two wrote several plays throughout the 1980s. They both achieved their biggest commercial and critical success in 1990 with Prelude to a Kiss, which earned a 1991 Pulitzer Prize nomination. The play was later made into a film starring Meg Ryan and Alec Baldwin. René died of complications from AIDS in 1996. Since 2001, Lucas has received numerous awards as a playwright, director and screen writer including a 2001 Obie Award and a 2003 New York Film Critics Award. In 2022, he was nominated for a Tony Award for the musical, Paradise Square. Island City Stage’s production of The Dying Gaul is directed by Rogow and stars Amir Darvish (Jeffrey), Jorge Amador (Robert), Autumn Kioti Horne (Elaine), and Ted deChatelet (Foss).
