History Fort Lauderdale’s Family Fun Day Featuring Meet & Greet with Authors George S. LeMieux & Laura E. Mize

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present a free Family Fun Day, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, February 24. The day will feature kid-friendly activities presented in conjunction with museum partners Flamingo Gardens and NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and will include a book signing and meet & greet with George LeMieux and Laura Mize, authors of Florida Heritage Kids. Their appearances are part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author monthly series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed. Florida Heritage Kids is an insightful novel that takes readers on historical journeys from a Spanish settlement to the modern era, through the eyes of five young people - Alonso, Holata, Thomas, Madeleine, and Ruby. Their stories tell of soldiers storming an enemy fort during a chaotic hurricane, the tale of a young Indian warrior helping rescue the Tribe, fleeing from a cloud of mosquitoes so big it blocks out the sun and the learning experience of moving to a new tropical paradise. Florida Heritage Kids highlights culture, heritage, and the natural resources found in Florida, which gives readers a better understanding of the Sunshine State’s fundamentals. The book is available in History Fort Lauderdale’s Museum Shop, on Amazon.com, and at FloridaHeritageKids.com. Florida native George S. LeMieux has enjoyed a long career in both the private and public sectors. He served as Florida’s 34th United States senator in the 111th Congress. He also served as Florida’s deputy attorney general and as former Governor Charlie Crist’s chief of staff. LeMieux is a practicing attorney and is a chairman on the board of Gunster. He founded the LeMieux Center for Public Policy at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Laura E. Mize is an award-winning book author, an independent journalist, and a former reporter for The Palm Beach Post. Her work has been picked up by the Associated Press, published in newspapers across the country, and aired on National Public Radio. Her first book, Florida Made: The 25 Most Important Figures Who Shaped The State (written with George S. LeMieux), won the 2019 National Indie Excellence Award in the history genre. Mize has written extensively on Florida business, history, food, dining, and agriculture. Some of that work has appeared in The Local Palate, the premier magazine on Southern culinary culture. In addition, she has an extensive portfolio of health sciences writing for institutions such as Mayo Clinic and the University of Florida, and for the award-winning, internationally syndicated radio show Health in a Heartbeat. Tri-Rail’s Free Family “Rail Fun Day” on Saturday, February 24

Tri-Rail’s “Rail Fun Day” presented by Herzog and TransDev will return to the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport Station at Dania Beach (500 Gulf Stream Way) on Saturday, February 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendees of the annual free family fun day will enjoy live entertainment, arts and crafts, interactive games, cookie decorating, photos with Tri-Rail’s mascot Conductor George Green and popular costumed characters, face painting, giveaways, food trucks and the “South Florida’s Kids Got Talent” singing competition. Children and families will enjoy interactive games, arts and crafts with Art and Culture Center/ Hollywood and activities from popular South Florida businesses and organizations, including Flamingo Gardens, Florida Panthers, History Fort Lauderdale, Humane Society of Broward County, Le P’ti Club and the Museum of Discovery and Science. Food will be available for purchase from Don Chingon Tacos, Emmy Beth’s Ice Cream, I Love Panzerotti and Jake’s Drive-In Burgers. Attendees will also enjoy live stage entertainment by local arts groups plus Tri-Rail’s “South Florida’s Kids Got Talent” show where young stars will show off their singing talents. The first-place winner will receive $500, a one-year contract inclusive of a photo shoot with composite cards courtesy of Posche Models & Talent and professional studio and music video recording sessions with Mike Soper Music. The 11 talented singers selected to compete are: Charley Beck (Fort Lauderdale), Daniella Perez-Ortega (Pembroke Pines), Dylan Daniel Bustos (Miami), Emilie Paul (Boynton Beach), Emma Nevico (Boynton Beach), Fallyn Holloway (Coconut Creek), Hannah O. Brody (Miami), Keira Herdtner (Weston), Lila Fuchs (Boca Raton), Samantha Schmerling (Hollywood) and Sophia Zann (Fort Lauderdale). Eventgoers are encouraged to ride the train to the event with round-trip fares of just $5 and free for kids 12 and under on this day, only. The lively installation will feature eight larger-than-life, three-dimensional colorful spinning tops in a variety of colors and shapes that invite visitors to play and engage with the art. The exhibition was created and developed by the Australian National Maritime Museum, an Australian Government entity. Flying Fish manages the exhibit tour. It is locally sponsored by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Experience South Florida’s award-winning attraction featuring 150,000 square feet of dynamic science exhibits, an outdoor science park, a live animal collection, a rotating schedule of science shows, learning labs, café, store and a grand atrium featuring the Great Gravity Clock, a 52-foot-tall kinetic energy sculpture; the largest clock in Florida.
