Island City Stage Presents “I Wanna F#%*ing Tear You Apart” by Jon Brittain

Island City Stage 2304 N. Dixie Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States
Island City Stage, in co-production with Out Front Theatre Company in Atlanta, will present the South Florida debut of “I Wanna F#%*ing Tear You Apart” by Morgan Gould, from March 2 – April 2. Bring your bestie to see this new limited show that tackles love, friendship and jealousy with a touch of snark. It’s “Will & Grace” on steroids! Samantha and Leo are a team - best friends, roommates, allies against the world - until a new friend enters and upends their co-dependent world of mutual self-loathing and “Grey’s Anatomy” marathons. A play about the nature of friendships in all of its f#%*ked up forms, with a special shout-out to the kind of love that sometimes looks like a lot of rage. “I Wanna F#%*ing Tear You Apart” was developed by and with the Brooklyn College MFA Writer’s Workshop, SPACE on Ryder Farm, and through the 2016 Beatrice Terry Award/ Drama League. In February 2017, the play ran at Studio Theatre in Washington, D.C. The production was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding New Play. Directed by Melissa Foulger and co-produced by DC Allen and Ken Flick, I Wanna F#%*ing Tear You Apart stars Matthew Busch as Leo, Sofia Palmero as Samantha. Both actors are starring in the Atlanta production and will continue their run at Island City Stage. Joining the cast is Casey Sacco as Chloe who has appeared at Island City Stage in Summer Shorts and Zanna Don't and designed the costumes for the current production of Rotterdam. Matthew Busch will reprise his role of Leo from Atlanta’s Out Front Theatre production “I Wanna F#%*ing Tear You Apart”. The actor and director also appeared in the company’s productions of The Flower Room, The Thrush & The Woodpecker, and Equus. He has also appeared in Atlanta productions of Kiss of the Spiderwoman (Actor’s Express), Exit Strategy (Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre), Entertaining Lesbians, Tokens of Affection, The Credeaux Canvas, Other Desert Cities, The House of Yes (Out of Box Theatre), among others. Also hailing from Atlanta to appear in the Island City Stage production is Sofía Palmero. Palmero’s credits include The Santa Closet (Out Front), Bull in a China Shop (Out Front Theatre), Fuddy Meers (Essence to Crux), Spirits to Enforce (Vernal & Sere), and Henry IV & V (Shakespeare on Draft). You may also catch a glimpse of them in Blumhouse’s queer horror film, “They/Them” on Peacock. Melissa Foulger is the artistic director of DramaTech, Georgia Tech’s student run theatre. Foulger has directed throughout the Atlanta area at theatres such as 7 Stages, Actor’s Express, Theatre in the Square, Aurora Theatre, Theatrical Outfit, and Dad’s Garage. Her productions of Wolves, Suddenly Last Summer and Far Away have garnered top director nods from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Creative Loafing and The Sunday Paper. Wolves, Pluto, See What I Wanna See and Clybourne Park have won multiple Suzi Bass Awards. She was nominated for a Suzi Award for Best Director for Wolves at Actor’s Express. She has guest lectured on topics such as “Improvisation and Technology,” “Theatre as a Form of Game,” and “Ritual and Play” and is a member of the Digital Performance Initiative, which researches the intersection of performance with the latest technology. Creating quality professional theatrical experiences focused on the LGBT+ community for a universal audience, Island City Stage’s 11th South Florida season tackles thought-provoking productions that explore poignant longing, gender questions, loneliness, the ins and outs of friendship and the magic of random human connection. South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents an Evening of Dvořák Masterworks Featuring Grammy Winner Zuill Bailey

The Parker 707 N.E. 8th Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States
South Florida Symphony Orchestra will present a bold and daring evening of Dvořák Masterworks, featuring his love letter to America, Symphony No. 9 in E minor: “From the New World” as well as Cello Concerto in B minor, the greatest of all cello concertos, performed by Grammy Award-winning artist Zuill Bailey - who also appeared during the Symphony’s inaugural concert 25 years ago. Led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso, the concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 22, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are on sale, now. Maestra Alfonso and Zuill Bailey have known each other since their days at Peabody Conservatory. Over the years, he has become a frequent SFSO guest artist and a favorite among audiences. He is widely considered one of the premier cellists in the world and is an internationally renowned soloist, artistic director, and teacher. His illustrious recording career consists of over 20 titles. His CD, Dvořák Cello Concerto is listed in Penguin’s Guide as one of the Top 1000 Classical Recordings of All Time. He also won a GRAMMY for Best Solo Performance for his live recording of Tales of Hemingway by composer Michael Daugherty. A consummate concerto soloist, Bailey has been featured with symphony orchestras worldwide, including Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, Israel, Cape Town, Russia, Hong Kong, Jordan, Mexico, South America, the United Kingdom, and Austria. He has collaborated with such conductors as Itzhak Perlman, Alan Gilbert, Andrew Litton, Neeme Jarvi, Giancarlo Guerrero, James DePriest, and Jun Markl, to name a few. Classical Net calls Bailey “easily one of the finest cellists alive today,” and states that he “commands a simply lovely tone, passionate and full of vigor,” in a review of his Dvořák Cello Concerto recording. In 1892, Antonín Dvořák was recruited to be the director for the National Conservatory of Music in New York City, which opened in 1888 to make music education available to talented students from every background, including marginalized communities and fostering the creation of American national music. In his quest to bring the sounds of America into European classical music, his most famous work was born, the four-movement Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, better known as “New World Symphony.” In the lead-up to its 1893 premiere by the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall, Dvořák commented that he thought the core of an American sound could be found in Native American communities and African American spirituals, which you can hear in the composition. Upon its premiere, a reporter for the New York Herald observed that the new symphony was “a noble composition…of heroic proportions.” Cello Concerto in B minor, the most widely regarded and also the last solo concerto by Antonín Dvořák, will be performed by Zuill Bailey. Written in 1894 for Dvořák's friend, the cellist Hanuš Wihan, it premiered in London in 1896 by the English cellist Leo Stern. Dvořák wrote the concerto while in New York City for his third term as the director of the National Conservatory. After hearing composer Victor Herbert's Cello Concerto No. 2 in E minor, Op. 30, Dvořák was inspired to complete a cello concerto of his own. Herbert had been the principal cellist in the New York Philharmonic that premiered Dvořák's "New World Symphony" in 1893. SFSO’s 25th anniversary season concert closer will be Rachmaninoff and Bruckner on April 26 at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets for the Dvořák Masterworks program start at $15 for The Parker. The romantic, yet, complicated piece, was originally intended as a spotlight soloist piece for Rachmaninoff’s friend Josef Hofmann, who eventually elected not to perform it. So complex is this piece, that the biographical film drama “Shine” detailed pianist David Helfgott’s quest to conquer the concerto resulting in his ultimate mental breakdown. Notable appearances include the Mariinsky Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, New York Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Odessa and Nizhny Novgorod Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, New Florida Philharmonic, Shreveport Symphony and New York Chamber Orchestra. Tango and Beyond, by Alexandra Marie

NSU Art Museum 1 East Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States
About the Show "Tango and Beyond” features musical works that highlight a genre that has captivated composers with its sensuous style and music throughout the 20th Century. “Tango and Beyond” will bring a classical flavor to the Argentine tango style and its connection to other genres. From tango master’s like Carlos Gardel and Le Pera favorites "El Día que me Quieras", "Mi Buenos Aires Querido" during the golden era of tango, to Piazzolla’s Nuevo Tango with works like "Maria de Buenos Aires". The influence of Habanera in the tango style extended to classical composers such as Bizet "Carmen's Habanera", Kurt Weill "Youvali" and Stravinsky "Tango”, and the romantic bolero tango by Maria Grever "Jurame". Another feature piece,"Yiddishe Tango", demonstrated the influence that tango had all over the world in the 1930's and 1940's. The concert will also feature contemporary American Composer Paul Schoenfield, who included a tango movement in his work “Four Souvenirs”, for violin and piano. The concert will be sung in many languages featuring Spanish, French, English and Yiddish because tango has transcended beyond cultures and time. Together with Alexandra pianist Paul Schawrzt, from Florida Grand Opera, Argentine bandoneonist Laura Cadabon and German and Rocio Felipeli.
