Q&A Interview

Where are you from?

I was born in Western New York and moved to South Florida when I was 16. I loved living here from the first moment I stepped bare-foot on the beach with my new friends (minus the lizards in Fla).

Has your personal upbringing influenced your design approach—and if so, how?
I had parents who were very supportive and saw my potential early on. For creative kids, that is the make or break moment. I’ve never been afraid to express my creative self, which I believe gave me confidence that led to my success.

How did you get started in design?
I’ve always been innately drawn to art and design, even before I understood it as a young child. It was just a natural progression of what I loved and immersed myself in throughout life.

What first sparked your love of design?
I won a poster design competition while in high school that proved how much influence design can have. I was astounded that my visual concepts could have such strong impact, this first one effecting jury trials. That was the day I decided to study design, share my creative ideas and make a difference in the world. I was unstoppable after that, winning 17 other competitions in high school alone.

If you weren’t an interior designer, what would you be doing instead?
Anything creative excites me. I’ve been in advertising design, art and education. I am a creative problem solver who has the skills and knowledge to successfully engage in any creative field. My varied creative life, travels and experience makes me a successful, enthusiastic interior designer. I have been awarded top industry awards in all fields I’ve engaged in.
Fun fact: my husband Michael, as well as our two daughters have degrees in varied areas of design, and all have that same creative thinking gene.

DEFINING MOMENTS

Do you have a design mentor or idol?
I admire any kind of creative who is inspired and inspires others. I like the quiet ones who do not scream for attention, but are so mind-blowingly talented. Those are the gems.

What’s one project or accomplishment you’re especially proud of?
I truly believe your living experience at home is most important for grounding your life. I’m always so proud when clients tell me how we have transformed their living experience, what it does for them personally that they didn’t know was possible. It’s my ‘why’. I pinch myself that I’m invited into homes to have such impact on something so important and personal.

SIGNATURE STYLE & PHILOSOPHY

How would you describe your signature style in three words?
Artful. Restorative. Personal.

What’s one design rule you always follow, and one you love to break?
Follow: People first. The home is about the people living their lives in it.
Break: Don’t follow rules set by others. Always question why and what could be and make your own rules.

How do you make a home feel both beautiful and livable?
We choose gorgeous materials and fabrics that are high-performance. It’s the way she can have her dream cream sofa while still raising her little monsters, as she describes them.

What color or material are you obsessed with right now?
I’m loving those big, fluffy, textured teddy-bear-like fabrics on furniture. I hope they never go out of style. It speaks to comfort and childhood. We saw them all over High Point showrooms this year and I had to be dragged off them each time.

What’s your favorite room to transform, and why?
Give me a good powder room and I excitedly run with it. It’s a jewel box to show a bit more drama and creativity.

ADVICE FOR HOMEOWNERS

Where should homeowners splurge and where can they save?
Splurge: Lighting and the furniture you use most, like sectional sofas
Save: Rugs, if you have pets

What’s one timeless element you always recommend?
I’d say whatever you have always loved, that you may never veer from, regardless of times changing, would be right for you.

What’s your go-to trick for making a small room feel larger?
Mirrors reflect space, and scale up while keeping design simple. As I always say, “Bigger is better and less is more.”

What’s one thing every homeowner should do before starting a project?
Know the scope of the project and be upfront with your priorities and goals when hiring a designer. You’ll spend a lot of time with them, so make sure you align properly.

JUST FOR FUN

Favorite city for design inspiration: Barcelona
Dream client: Someone who understands and respects the design process and is ready to enjoy it with me
Favorite paint color right now: I get excited about how color palettes work together
Material obsession: Anything with texture
Most underrated room: Children’s rooms. That is where some homeowners cut back, but I think a child’s room has an impact on them forever. Ask a therapist, but I think it should be a primary focus, honestly
First thing you notice in a room: Architectural structure. If architecture is not working, then nothing after that will work. You know, lipstick on a pig.
Favorite design era: Mid-century. I lean modern in my personal aesthetic and I love designers of that era
One thing you can’t live without: (two things) Art and Books
Go-to design tool: My good sense of humor. Without it, I’m doomed
Design-day beverage: Water in my Owala. It keeps it cold in the SF heat and it’s cute. I know, boring, but I’m allergic to caffeine.
