  • Purr-fect Match: PURRR Adoption + Sanctuary Celebrates National Adopt a Cat Month this June

PURRR Adoption + Sanctuary 1556 E. Commercial Blvd., Oakland Park, FL, United States
June is National Adopt a Cat Month and National Hug Your Cat Month, making it the perfect time to find a forever feline friend. Cute cats, cozy cuddles, and forever love await at PURRR Adoption + Sanctuary (PURRR). This Father’s Day, PURRR is launching South Florida’s Top Cat Dad campaign. Founded in 2018, PURRR Adoption + Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to transform cats' lives one PURRR at a time, through rescue, adoption, and spay + neuter initiatives that help reduce overpopulation and enrich the human-feline connection. PURRR is committed to giving cats and their companions a better future by offering a safe haven and encouraging responsible pet ownership. While most adoption services are self-service, PURRR believes that every cat has someone and finding the right feline companion is a special journey. Through its “Find Your One” process, PURRR’s team helps future cat moms and dads find their soul cat and guides them every step of the way. With over 150 adoptable cats, the PURRR team knows every cat – their personality, history, quirks and what kind of home they need to become themselves fully. Whether future cat parents are seeking a playful and energetic kitten, a calm and cuddly adult cat, or a wise and gentle senior, PURRR’s diverse selection of feline friends ensures there’s a perfect match for every home. Soul cat profiles built around personality are available on each feline friend in PURRR’s care. During the “Find Your One” process, PURRR’s expert team asks the right questions and pays attention to make a match with intention. This is more than adoption, it’s placement. The “Find Your One” experience starts with filling out an application to help PURRR’s team understand the adoptee’s preferences, lifestyle, and what they're looking for in a cat companion. Within 48 hours, a PURRR team member will schedule a meet and greet for the chance to see firsthand the personalities and quirks of feline residents. After connecting with a potential furry family member, PURRR schedules a 15-minute in-home, educational consultation to ensure a smooth integration into the home. PURRR prioritizes the new feline family member's well-being and conducts a comprehensive final medical examination and bloodwork before taking the lifelong feline companion home. The PURRR team will check in after a week to ensure a smooth transition and address any questions. Beyond adoption day, PURRR provides support, resources, and guidance throughout the journey as a pet owner. “June is the perfect reminder that every cat matters, and every cat deserves someone who shows up for them,” said Founder Tanya Lynn Heller. “At PURRR, every adoption is intentional. Through our ‘Find Your One’ process, we take the time to truly understand each cat and each family, because everyone has a soul cat, and it's our job to help them find each other.” This Father’s Day, PURRR is searching for South Florida’s Top Cat Dad. Cat dads, foster dads, rescue dads and dedicated volunteers are all welcome to enter for the chance to win. To enter, participants can either direct message @purrr.family on Instagram or email [email protected] their favorite photos. Participants will get a bonus entry if they upload a photo and tag @purrr.family in a post. Bonus points for funny photos, rescue stories and cats with very strong opinions. The deadline for photo submissions is Wednesday, June 10, and the community will vote for the winner leading up to Father’s Day weekend. Each vote is a $1 donation that helps a cat in need. The top five finalists will be featured across PURRR’s social media pages. The winner will be announced on Friday, June 19. “This Father's Day, we're celebrating cat dads. Whether they rescued a stray, fostered a litter, or simply answered a tiny meow at the door, they showed up, and that means everything,” Heller continued. One unspayed cat and her offspring are capable of producing as many as 4,950 kittens over seven years. Since its inception, PURRR has performed over 12,800 spay + neuter surgeries and 450 through partnerships with shelters. Feline overpopulation in South Florida stems from a persistent lack of accessible, affordable, and high-volume spay + neuter services, compounded by the continued, unmanageable growth of the community cat population, where demand far exceeds availability, particularly for free-roaming cats. Since launching its clinic in 2021, PURRR has become one of the few organizations in Broward County solely dedicated to addressing this crisis, building its Spay + Neuter and Vaccine Clinic on the principles of accessibility, collaboration, and impact. Serving the public, independent trappers, rescue organizations, and underserved communities, the program offers significantly reduced rates for community cats and discounted pricing for rescues, ensuring cost is never a barrier to preventing future litters, reducing overpopulation, and keeping the number of cats entering shelters during peak kitten season in check. PURRR's clinic model combines surgical efficiency with compassionate, individualized care, ensuring every cat receives the attention and safety they deserve. It’s backed by a team driven by a deep love for cats and an unwavering commitment to their well-being. Together, the clinic's low-cost services and TNR efforts reflect a broader mission: providing consistent, lifesaving care to South Florida's most vulnerable feline populations, year after year.

  • History Fort Lauderdale’s “Three by the River” Artists-in-Residence Exhibition

History Fort Lauderdale/New River Inn 231 SW Second Ave., Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States
History Fort Lauderdale presents “Three by the River,” an Artists-in-Residence annual exhibition, from June 4 to June 30. Featured will be acrylics by Constance Ivana, mixed media works by Stephanie McMillan, and portraits by Florencia Clement de Grandprey. Constance Ivana is a Fort Lauderdale–based mural artist and visual creative passionate about creating bold, vibrant artwork that sparks reflection, conversation, and joy. Her art is inspired by social justice, Black stories, women’s voices, and nature. Stephanie McMillan is a third-generation Fort Lauderdale resident and artist. Her distinctive style combines affectionate humor with the bright colors of the sunny tropics. A graduate of the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, with a focus in animation, she began drawing illustrations and editorial cartoons, for which she won several Florida Press Club awards. This led to 25 years as a widely published freelance cartoonist and illustrator producing award-winning editorial cartoons, syndicated comic strips, comic journalism, and graphic novels. In recent years she has returned to painting, drawing, and mixed media assemblage. She is the author/illustrator of several books including As the World Burns and The Beginning of the American Fall: A Comics Journalist Inside the Occupy Wall Street Movement (Seven Stories Press). Her original sketches, illustrations, comics, and papers are archived at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum at Ohio State University. Born and raised in southern Spain, Florencia Clement de Grandprey is a self-taught mixed media figurative artist whose mission is to empower and inspire through meaningful and uplifting artwork. Her artistic journey began in 2014 when she left her full-time job in interior design to follow her true passion: painting. Clement de Grandprey has developed a style without rules, granting her the freedom to express herself fully. She blends her love for the classic masters with contemporary design, resulting in unique mixed media paintings. Her award-winning work celebrates strong, confident, soul-aligned men and women. She aims to highlight our unique, perfectly imperfect nature, bringing out our strengths and beauty as a reminder of who we truly are. She ensures that a variety of ethnicities are represented, making everyone feel seen and honored in her art. History Fort Lauderdale’s Artists-in-Residence Annual Show is sponsored by the following funds at the Community Foundation of Broward: Jan and Ed Crocker Unrestricted Fund, Leo M. and Alice J. Rutten Fund and The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation Broward Community Fund.
