Mike McGinness and Jeff Davies have put together the definitive photographic account of the Sunshine State. With more than 130 photographs ― many of them seen for the first time ― “Florida: A History in Pictures” offers a stunning portrait of this one-of-a-kind state. From the stone forts at St. Augustine, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States, to the Everglades (or “The Big Swamp” as it was called at the beginning of the 20th century) to Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, the Fort Myers Beach arches and Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, it is all here.
Mike McGinness is a native of Florida, born in Orlando and raised in Altamonte Springs and Tampa. He has lived in Florida for more than 50 years. He has a passion for studying history, the great outdoors, bass fishing, music, and rooting for his favorite sports teams. He works in Data Center Operations for AdventHealth in Altamonte Springs and has been with the same company for 38 years.
Boca Raton resident Jeff Davies’ passion for history has spanned many decades. His family relocated to North Bay Village from Brooklyn when Jeff was just five years old. Davies was always interested in the history behind old pictures and became known as the family historian. He eventually became the third generation in the audio/video electronics business and continues with this profession today.

This year’s honorees are Lori Wheeler, vice president of Marine Industries Association of South Florida, Barbara Sharief, former Broward County commissioner and founder and CEO of South Florida Pediatric Homecare, Inc., Heather Geronemus, senior director, social equity, opportunity and impact at UKG, Stephanie Toothaker, Esq., chairwoman and chief strategist of Toothaker.org, Joy Satterlee, executive director of Art and Culture Center/Hollywood and Ramola Motwani, chairwoman, Merrimac Ventures.
Today’s modern champions, along with their historical female predecessors who helped to pave the way for our community, will be honored during a ticketed preview and recognition ceremony benefiting History Fort Lauderdale on Thursday, March 9, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., at Galleria Fort Lauderdale (2414 East Sunrise Blvd). The photography exhibition celebrating their achievements will be on display through March 31.
Past pioneering women counterparts to be highlighted in the exhibit include Angeline Weir (1924 - 2007), Broward's first woman distaff solicitor and secretary to Broward State Attorney's office as well as the first woman to be appointed Municipal Court Judge in Hallandale; Sylvia Alridge (1884 -1962), creator of the first woman-owned employment agency in Fort Lauderdale plus a cab company and fundraiser/champion of desegregating healthcare; Elsie Bellamy Blackwell (1896 - 2001), business partner/owner of Blackwell pharmacy and restaurants Rockery Tea Room and Stranahan House’s Pioneer House, which was one of only three restaurants in the area in 1940; Jane Wray (1882-1969), preservationist who established Floyd L. Wray Foundation in 1969 to preserve 60 acres of land which would later become Flamingo Gardens, secretary and treasurer of Board of Flamingo Groves, and Hollywood School of Fine Arts teacher in 1926; Sadye Katz (1902-1986), co-owner of the first women's dress shop with her husband (Mack's Lady Shop), fundraiser for the first area synagogue, Temple Emanu-El (founding member), Holy Cross Hospital and War Memorial and founder of Service Men’s Center (1942); and Mary Brickell (1836 - 1922), regional pioneer and land owner who helped shape Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Colee Hammock and in 1917, was instrumental in developing Las Olas Boulevard and building a bridge over the New River Sound which connected the mainland to the beach.

In 1946, at the age of nine, John Bailey arrived at the New River with his parents. He attended several of the area’s different schools - West Side, Davie, Naval Air, Central, and Fort Lauderdale High School. Through his various local teachers, Bailey developed an abiding interest in his hometown. Many of his personal experiences of growing up and living along the River are sprinkled throughout this book. His previous best-selling history books include “Sentinel of the Jersey Cape,” “The Story of the Cape May Lighthouse; Cape Island,” “The Jewel of the Jersey Shore” and “Juet’s Journal, Henry Hudson’s Explorations on the Half Moon.”

Habitat for Humanity of Broward’s homeownership program applications to open for new two-story townhomes in Fort Lauderdale and Coral Springs beginning on Wednesday, February 15, via www.habitatbroward.org. The application deadline is Friday, March 31. Qualified prospective homeowners do not want to miss this limited opportunity.
The new energy-efficient, two-story townhomes will include three to four bedrooms, garages, modern kitchens, landscaped yards, and hurricane-impact windows.
These locations are close to city centers, schools, churches, and recreational and shopping amenities with easy access to transportation and major traffic corridors.
The application process has four steps that include a pre-qualification questionnaire, orientation, financial analysis review, and face-to-face interview. Successful applicants can expect to move into a home within 12 to 18 months.
Qualifications include but are not limited to the following:
• Must be a first-time homebuyer.
• Must be a U.S. Citizen or legal permanent resident.
• Must be a current Broward County resident or working in Broward (for a year or more).
• Must demonstrate a need for affordable housing.
• Must be within HUD income guidelines.
• Must be committed to making affordable mortgage payments.
• Must be able to show $3,000 in savings and pay $2,700 in escrow.

The Help of Angels invites readers to view life in Europe before and during the Holocaust from a personal and highly unique perspective. The Help of Angels is a moving historical novel that takes readers on a journey through the time period of 1933 to 1945, showcasing the experiences of Benjamin Weiss, a young man who witnesses the atrocities of the Holocaust firsthand. The novel follows Ben’s life in a small Hungarian town, his family’s survival and loss during the Second World War, and his imprisonment in the Mauthausen concentration camp. The novel tells the fate of one family while highlighting the experience of millions who suffered at the hands of Hungarian and Nazi war criminals. H.J. Zeger is a self-taught writer who established his independent publishing company, Sunbridge Books. He grew up in Newburgh, New York, and attended the Culinary Institute of America before pursuing a career in the catering, restaurant, and hotel business. The author's first book, If Frogs Could Fly, is a satirical tale about a search for a lost tribe of Israel in the Amazon Jungle of Peru. Although it is currently unavailable in print, the novel is being made into an audiobook.

American Heritage Schools is hosting virtual and in-person spring open house events for prospective families who are interested in enrolling their children at its Broward or Palm Beach campuses.
Each open house offers parents and children an opportunity to meet with the American Heritage Schools team, including the admissions directors, teachers, program directors and principals. The Palm Beach campus will host its open houses on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 9:30 a.m. in person and on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. virtually. The Broward campus will host its open houses on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. virtually.
The spring open house events will start with a brief introduction from school administrators, then participants will have the opportunity to hear about American Heritage Schools’ extensive curriculum from the educators.
