Friday, Oct. 20 – Alternative Rock Band The Church to Perform in Fort Lauderdale
A Musical Treat for Indie Rock Fans
Australian rock group The Church originated in Sydney in 1980. In the beginning, they were associated with new wave, neo-psychedelia, and indie rock genres. Over time, their music evolved to include slower tempos and surreal soundscapes reminiscent of alternative rock, dream pop, and post-rock.
The original members of the band were Steve Kilbey, handling lead vocals and bass guitar, Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper on guitars, and Nick Ward on drums. Ward’s involvement was limited to their debut album, and in the 1980s, Richard Ploog took over as the band’s drummer. Jay Dee Daugherty, formerly of the Patti Smith Group, assumed drumming duties from 1990 to 1993, followed by “timEbandit” Tim Powles, formerly of The Venetians, who has remained with the band to this day.
The Church gained attention with their debut album, “Of Skins and Heart” (1981), which featured their first radio hit, “The Unguarded Moment.” They secured record deals in Australia, Europe, and the United States. However, their US label dropped them due to dissatisfaction with their second album, impacting their international success. Nonetheless, they made a comeback in 1988 with the album “Starfish” and the US Top 40 hit “Under the Milky Way.” While mainstream success has been elusive since then, the band maintains a dedicated international fan base and was honored with induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in Sydney in 2010. The Church continues to tour and release music, with their 25th studio album, “Man Woman Life Death Infinity,” coming out in October 2017, and their 26th and most recent album, “The Hypnogogue,” released in February 2023.
