History Fort Lauderdale and Galleria Fort Lauderdale will honor six impactful women who lead our community during its “Women Trailblazers: Champions of Change - Broward County” 2024 presented by UKG ticketed reception benefitting History Fort Lauderdale set for 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, at Galleria Fort Lauderdale (2414 E. Past pioneering women counterparts to be highlighted in the photo exhibit include Jeanne Goon Moy (1913-2006), owner and operator of Moy Chinese Restaurant in Hollywood, Florence Hardy (1897-1975), the City of Fort Lauderdale’s first female city clerk and sometime acting city manager who collaborated with the Chamber of Commerce to build Las Olas canals, bridges, and isles, Blanche Forman (1886-1959), who established Hamilton and Blanche Forman Foundation to support education and donated land for the now esteemed Nova Southeastern University, Barbara Bridge (1929-2016), the first female county court judge and second female circuit court judge, and Betty Mae Tiger Jumper (1923-2011), the first Seminole to graduate high school and earn a higher education nursing degree. Tiger Jumper spent most of her adult life advocating for the Seminole community and improving healthcare services. CAN Community Health and Galleria Fort Lauderdale Present World AIDS Day Kickoff

CAN Community Health and Galleria Fort Lauderdale have joined forces to commemorate World AIDS Day through an official public event aimed at raising awareness and providing a collective voice for global health. The public is invited on Friday, December 1, at 8:30 a.m., to participate in an official kickoff ceremony in honor of World AIDS Day at Galleria Fort Lauderdale (2414 E. Sunrise Blvd.). Attendees are encouraged to pre-register at CAN Community Health's World AIDS Day Page. In 2022, UNAIDS reported approximately 1.3 million HIV cases, with an estimated 630,000 deaths attributed to AIDS-related illnesses during the same year. Since the onset of the epidemic, there have been an estimated 40.4 million deaths. According to the CDC, the risk of HIV remains high among Black and Latino gay and bisexual men. On December 1, World AIDS Day, the morning will commence with a gathering of elected officials, fellow HIV-related agencies and other stakeholders. The event will feature special performances by LeNora Jaye and the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. The event will take place inside the mall’s Palm Court Market connected to the main valet parking area. In honor of PRIDE Month (June 2023), History Fort Lauderdale presents “Take PRIDE! A Retrospective of LGBTQ Life in South Florida.” The multimedia exhibit, located near Swarovski, between Macy’s and Dillard’s, will include over 100 historical photographs plus videos and costumes chronicling the growth, awareness and struggle of the LGBTQ community through the years. Photos will capture the liberation movement of the 1960s and ‘70s, the activism and rise of PRIDE parades and human rights rallies and the proliferation of gay-centric world-famous business endeavors including the Marlin Beach Hotel, The Copa and Backstreet. A Photo Tribute Wall will feature lifestyle and significant event photos from Michael Murphy Photography. In addition, the exhibit will include the showing of “Open Dialogues,” an award-winning short film which captures the personal narratives of LGBTQ voices, produced by Art and Culture Center Hollywood, directed by Miami-based filmmaker Freddy Rodriguez and funded by Community Foundation of Broward. History Fort Lauderdale and Galleria Fort Lauderdale’s “Women Trailblazers: Champions of Change - Broward County” presented by UKG is a Women’s History Month photography exhibition that celebrates six impactful women of today who lead our community along with their pioneering counterparts of yesteryear. This year’s modern women honorees are Lori Wheeler, vice president of Marine Industries Association of South Florida; Barbara Sharief, former Broward County commissioner and founder and CEO of South Florida Pediatric Homecare, Inc.; Heather Geronemus, senior director, social equity, opportunity and impact at UKG; Stephanie Toothaker, Esq., chairwoman and chief strategist of Toothaker.org; Joy Satterlee, executive director of Art and Culture Center/Hollywood; and Ramola Motwani, chairwoman, Merrimac Ventures. Past pioneering women counterparts to be highlighted in the exhibit include Angeline Weir (1924 - 2007), Broward's first woman distaff solicitor and secretary to Broward State Attorney's office as well as the first woman to be appointed Municipal Court Judge in Hallandale; Sylvia Alridge (1884 -1962), creator of the first woman-owned employment agency in Fort Lauderdale plus a cab company and fundraiser/champion of desegregating healthcare; Elsie Bellamy Blackwell (1896 - 2001), business partner/owner of Blackwell pharmacy and restaurants Rockery Tea Room and Stranahan House’s Pioneer House, which was one of only three restaurants in the area in 1940; Jane Wray (1882-1969), preservationist who established Floyd L. Wray Foundation in 1969 to preserve 60 acres of land which would later become Flamingo Gardens, secretary and treasurer of Board of Flamingo Groves, and Hollywood School of Fine Arts teacher in 1926; Sadye Katz (1902-1986), co-owner of the first women's dress shop with her husband (Mack's Lady Shop), fundraiser for the first area synagogue, Temple Emanu-El (founding member), Holy Cross Hospital and War Memorial and founder of Service Men’s Center (1942); and Mary Brickell (1836-1922), regional pioneer and land owner who helped shape Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Colee Hammock and in 1917, was instrumental in developing Las Olas Boulevard and building a bridge over the New River Sound which connected the mainland to the beach.
