Funding Arts Broward’s “Black & White: A Night At The Museum”

NSU Art Museum 1 East Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States
Funding Arts Broward (FAB), celebrating 20 years of preserving and cultivating the arts in Broward County, will present its sixth annual “Black & White: A Night At The Museum” special event on Monday, January 9, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. This cocktail party at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale will feature exclusive exhibit tours, live entertainment by Dillard High School Center for the Arts students and DJ Israel Charles, Champagne, culinary delights, and a decadent dessert table. Guests are encouraged to dress in their favorite black and white cocktail attire. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience Kathia St. Hilaire: Immaterial Being at the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale on a private tour by Bonnie Clearwater, director and chief curator of NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. This exhibition addresses the artist’s personal transcultural experience and material experimentation. Her interest in matter and process goes beyond a formal, visual concern, as it simultaneously creates a space in which to address the concept of the painting’s surface as it connects to the understanding of skin, color, and race. These critical notions are at the center of the artist’s practice and the broader Haitian narrative she seeks to tell. West Palm Beach native Kathia St. Hilaire‘s work portrays tender images of family gatherings, children at play, celestial bodies, scenes of death, and distinct Haitian iconography. Her visual language is enhanced by the ornate, textured surfaces on which these images appear. The distinct constructions are composed through a lattice framework of linoleum panels, sewn together to form quilt-like formations resembling ceremonial Haitian Vodun flags. St. Hilaire refers to her signature surface-making technique as reduction relief printing. This laborious crafting method combines an array of materials such as cosmetics, textiles, detritus, jewelry, enamels, and metals, which together form a haptic, abstract collage. These intricate and ethereal backgrounds become the stage for the artist’s figurative imagery. Included in this evening will be an exclusive tour of Scott Covert: I Had a Wonderful Life. I Had a Wonderful Life is the first solo museum exhibition dedicated to New Jersey-born artist Scott Covert. This presentation of Covert’s 40-year-long practice will center on his Monument Paintings, which the artist began making in 1985. Covert, a legendary figure within the eighties East Village art scene, forms his abstract compositions through the Victorian tradition of grave rubbing, in which an impression is lifted from the honorary reliefs on tombstones. With the cemeteries of the world serving as his itinerant studio, Covert has dedicated his life to visiting the resting places of what he calls “people of character.” The title of this exhibition is taken from the headstone of the quintessential aristocrat, Brooke Astor. These final words are not mournful, but joyous. Their uplifting sentiment resonates with Covert’s attitude toward his art. Each work is a celebration, a signifier of life, memory, and profound experience. Both exhibitions are curated by the Museum’s Bryant-Taylor Curator, Ariella Wolens. “Black & White: A Night At The Museum” is open to FAB members, friends, and public supporters of the arts. Tickets are $85 per person and are available at fabfunevents@gmail.com. For more information, please call (954) 353-7673 or email fundingartsbroward@gmail.com.

“TRIBUTES” Starring Joe Posa as Joan Rivers and Featuring Seth Sikes

Sunshine Cathedral Center for the Performing Arts 1480 Southwest 9th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States
The stars will align when Joe Posa and Seth Sikes unite to perform for one night only in “TRIBUTES,” a loving homage to female leading legends, on Saturday, January 14, at 8 p.m., at the Sunshine Cathedral Center for the Performing Arts (1480 SW 9th Avenue). Tickets for this dynamic duo show are on sale, now. This new tribute show, produced by the leading men, themselves, will bring two worlds of performance art together: female impersonation and live song. Joe Posa will impersonate Joan Rivers, Barbra Streisand, and Liza Minnelli while Seth Sikes will delight audiences with his soulful voice singing of nostalgic tunes made famous by Judy Garland, Bernadette Peters, and others. Joe Posa has made a name for himself in the show business, starting his career in musical theater as a performer/dancer featured in the international touring company of West Side Story plus other musicals including Anything Goes, Grease, A Chorus Line, and South Pacific. In 1993 (soon to be celebrating his 30th anniversary), he then found his wings as a sought-after female celebrity impersonator. Having performed alongside Ms. Rivers on two separate occasions, Posa was lovingly called by Ms. Rivers, her “favorite Joan Rivers Impersonator.” As a cast member in several productions of “An Evening at La Cage,” he has performed as Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli, Gloria Estefan, and Michael Jackson. Posa was also Susan Lucci’s Erica Kane character double on ABC’s “All My Children,” as well as Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon character double on NBC’s “30 Rock.” Posa has produced and starred in multiple shows in Provincetown, Puerta Vallarta, Boston, Palm Springs, New York City, London, and other cities for nearly 20 years. His productions include, “Guys as Dolls,” “An Evening at the Birdcage,” “Joe Posa Poses,” and “The Bitch is Back!” Also, he has performed at numerous red-carpet corporate functions, charity fundraisers, and elegant private events. Seth Sikes is one of New York’s most popular young nightclub performers. Hailed as “the best male singer of his generation” by Theatre Scene, Sikes has been selling out venues since his 2014 debut of “Seth Sikes Sings Judy Garland.” The show recounted how Garland inspired Sikes as a young boy in Paris, Texas, while he belted the legend’s greatest hits backed by a seven-piece band. The show won Broadway World’s Best Tribute Show award and prompted The New York Times to declare, “The performance was a hit with critics and audiences, alike.” The reviewers were equally enthusiastic toward his follow-up show, “Seth Sikes Sings Liza Minnelli.” The New York Post relayed, “It was a heartfelt concert. Sikes has a heap of fans, and his audiences are always tightly packed and brimming with enthusiasm for his booming, jazzy renditions of their favorite songs.” When the Covid pandemic prevented Sikes from performing for live audiences, he created a series of online music video parodies that went viral, viewed by hundreds of thousands. His most recent video, “Ring Them Bells,” was selected to close the globally broadcast of Liza Minnelli's 75th birthday tribute. Sikes also works in the theatre behind the scenes. He was associate director for “The Band’s Visit” and “The Nance” on Broadway. He directed the original musical “Bunked!” which won Outstanding Musical at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2010, as well as “The 7th Annual Broadway Beauty Pageant.” Tickets for “TRIBUTES” start at $35 with a $65 VIP ticket including premium seating and a meet and greet photo opportunity with both performers. To purchase tickets, visit bit.ly/TributesbyPosaandSikes.

Meet Author Donn R. Colee, Jr. at History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories”

History Fort Lauderdale 231 SW Second Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States
History Fort Lauderdale, celebrating 60 years of stewardship of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present a free book signing and meet & greet with Donn R. Colee, Jr., author of “Legends & Lore of Fort Lauderdale’s New River” (Arcadia Publishing/The History Press), on Tuesday, January 17, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Colee’s appearance is part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author monthly series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed. Colee Jr. is a seventh-generation Floridian and a direct descendent of George Colee, who immigrated to the St. Augustine area from England in 1821. Donn grew up in Orlando but frequently visited relatives in the ancient city, where his curiosity was piqued by stories about a massacre of long-ago family members at Fort Lauderdale’s New River. While the “Colee Massacre” story was later debunked, it refused to die. His “Legends & Lore of Fort Lauderdale’s New River” began as an attempt to finally resolve the last vestiges of that myth, but the power of New River quickly propelled the book to become a history of the river, its fascinating people, and the transformation of its wilderness into a metropolis. This is his second book. His first, “Towers in the Sand,” is the history of radio and television stations in Florida and the people who brought them to life. His family has been engaged in Florida broadcasting for three generations. Colee is a member of the Florida Historical Society, History Fort Lauderdale, St. Augustine Historical Society, and the Historical Society of Palm Beach County. He is a former commissioner of the Florida Inland Navigation District, the state agency responsible for maintenance and improvements of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway from Fernandina Beach to Key Biscayne. It was built by a company that was cofounded in 1881 by his great-great-great-grandfather, who became its civil engineer. Donn and his wife, Martha, reside in Palm Beach Gardens. Upcoming authors in the “Florida Scribes & Stories” series include Mike McGinnis and Jeff Davies on February 11. Additional novelists and dates will be announced. Guests may RSVP at bit.ly/HFLFloridaScribesColee2023. History Fort Lauderdale is proud to host a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year-round. Permanent exhibits include “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts,” a visual narrative weaving the story of the ever-changing use of Fort Lauderdale’s waterways by following the strokes of the first people to today’s sightseers, “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows visitors to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of stories and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale. The nonprofit museum also hosts an artists’ collective collaborative space. For more information about History Fort Lauderdale, please call (954) 463-4431 or visit historyfortlauderdale.org. Island City Stage Presents “Rotterdam” by Jon Brittain

Island City Stage 2304 N. Dixie Highway, Fort Lauderdale, FL, United States
Alice wants to come out as a lesbian. Her girlfriend Fiona wants to start living as a man. In Island City Stage’s new production of Rotterdam by Jon Brittain, audiences journey to find out what happens next in this modern comedy about gender, sexuality, and being a long way from home. Rotterdam runs from January 19 – February 19. Rotterdam, a new play from Jon Brittain, co-creator of Margaret Thatcher, Queen of Soho, and writer of What Would Spock Do? and The Sexual Awakening of Peter Mayo, is a moving and sensitive exploration of gender identity and relationships. It shares the story of a lesbian couple Alice, who is struggling to come out to her parents, and Fiona, who tells Alice that she has always identified as a man. Directed by Michael Leeds and co-produced by Sue Wilder, Rotterdam stars Suzanne Ankrum as Alice and Autumn Kioti Horne as Fiona. It also features Abbie Fricke as Lelani (in her Island City debut performance) and Robert Koutras as Josh. Suzanne Ankrum’s recent regional credits include Palm Beach Dramaworks production of A Streetcar Named Desire, WAM Theatre’s Emilie: La Marquise du Chatelet..., Majestic Theater’s Crimes of the Heart, New Century Theatre’s The How and the Why, Clarence Brown Theatre’s Woyzeck, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Tartuffe, and A Christmas Carol, and Richmond Shakespeare Festival’s Twelfth Night and Henry IV, Part 2. She’s also appeared on Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and has performed in several workshop productions from Palm Beach Dramaworks, Theatre Lab, Hartford Stage, Ivoryton Playhouse, and HartBeat Ensemble. South Florida artist and actor Autumn Kioti Horne has performed with Theatre Lab, Zoetic Stage, GableStage, Florida Stage, Caldwell Theatre, and others. In NYC, they originated the roles of Cassandra in The Hive, Veronica in She Calls Me Firefly and others. Their interdisciplinary art has been presented in galleries/spaces throughout the U.S. and abroad including La Mama, Dixon Place, The Queens Museum and Last Frontier, and more. They have also appeared in award-winning films at Lincoln Center, Art Basel, Sci-Fi London, Palm Springs Film Festival, and more. When not onstage, they run an environmental art/education/justice program Wildness is Necessary. Along with its Season 11 lineup, Island City Stage will be bringing back its introspective “Behind the Red Curtain” free public forum series, launched last year as an anniversary initiative to address the stories and issues that inspire its shows. Providing insight into Rotterdam, Island City Stage will present ‘‘Living the Truth - Seeing the Trans Community Through a Different Lens” on Monday, January 9, at 6:30 p.m. This forum will educate and inspire others regarding how to interact with transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals. The discussion will open hearts and minds by sharing personal triumphs, breaking down barriers, understanding fact vs. fiction, and reflecting on personal biases. Creating quality professional theatrical experiences focused on the LGBT+ community for a universal audience, Island City Stage’s 11th South Florida season offers thought-provoking productions that explore bittersweet longing, gender questions, loneliness, the ins and outs of friendship, the magic of random human connection and ethnic conflict within the generational divide. Upcoming shows include I Wanna F@#king Tear You Apart by Morgan Gould from March 2 – April 2; Tracy Jones by Stephen Kaplan from May 18 – June 18 and Springfield Pride Commissioned by Island City Stage from August 3 – September 3. Rotterdam set sponsors are Doug Pew and Don Croxton, costume sponsors are Thomas Nichols and Dan Chadburn, and lighting and sound sponsor is Scott Bennett. Tickets for Rotterdam start at $40. Enjoy a special Mimosa Sunday sponsored by Murl Casey on January 29 for $55 that includes a light bites pre-reception and a post-show talkback. A special Women’s Night at the Theatre will take place on Friday, February 3 with a 7 p.m. reception with light bites and beverages followed by the show.
